フロリダ州パームコーストの4人組、the whaler の野心的で爽快な2枚目のフルレングスは、物事が悪くなることに慣れるというコンセプトのレコードである。Jack Shirley (Joyce Manor、Deafheaven) がカリフォルニア州オークランドのアトミック・ガーデンでプロデュースした the whaler は、フロントウーマンのBrandon MacDonaldのソングライティングにおけるまぎれもない新章となり、2021年のデビューアルバム I Became Birds が残した期待に反して、同様に響くがより暗く広大なものを作り上げた。この the whaler は、荒廃したユートピアや、正常を装う絶望的な人々など、果てしない崩壊状態にある世界の暗い絵を描いているが、その根底には、脱却しようと叫ぶ人間性を肯定するものが流れている。
